Huawei prepares a super curved display phone?
Will it compete with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3?
Huawei's flagship phone, the Mate 50 Pro, coming out this fall, will probably be a handset with huge specifications. 5G support is standard, 12GB of RAM, 512GB of internal memory, 6.8-inch OLED touch screen display, quad (4) cameras on the back, dual (2) cameras on the front, Hi-Silicon Kirin 9000 chipset is expected to contain a 7000mAh battery This is coming out.
Let's Go Digital of the Netherlands reported on the 23rd (local time) that Huawei has secured a patent for a smartphone using a new curved display.
According to the patent document, this terminal has a so-called 'super curved (88 degree) display' with side touch function and is equipped with an under display camera (UDC). It also includes an artificial intelligence (AI) chip, stereo speakers, and more. A dedicated cooling system is also included to ensure optimal performance of the smartphone at all times.
As the patent acquisition period took place for quite a long time, there was even speculation that this display could be applied to the Mate 50 Pro to be released in October of this year.
The patented smartphone is equipped with an 88° edge-to-edge display with side touch functions on both rounded corners.
In March 2019, Huawei applied for a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) under the name of ‘Mobile Terminal’, and it was approved on the 15th of last month.
In the patent document, Huawei calls the very round display an 'Arc Display' or an 'arc-shaped display'. The application was filed in March 2019, but according to the US Patent and Trademark Office guidelines, we sent additional supplementary documents last year, and although the process took longer than usual, it was eventually approved this time.
The Huawei patent document also describes the existence of a pressure-sensitive touch system similar to Apple's old 3D Touch feature. Additional functions can be activated by pressing harder on the curved portion of the display.
A virtual button is also added. The virtual trigger button is useful when playing games in landscape mode.
The patent document states that the new smartphone will be equipped with an AI chip, a heat dissipation control system (cooling system), vibration components and stereo speakers.
This isn't the first time Huawei has patented a side-touch feature. Last year, the company patented a new camera control function that can also be activated next to the screen.
Besides Huawei, many Chinese manufacturers are trying to innovate more in this field of curved displays. This redesigned super curved display design is also very similar to the Lenovo smartphone, which was patented in April this year.
It is also noteworthy that the front camera is not visible in this patent image. It looks like Huawei will want to equip this model with the recently trending under-display camera (UDC).
Several smartphone manufacturers have already announced smartphones with UDC. A month ago, the ZTE Axon 30 was officially unveiled, followed by the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which in turn placed a selfie camera (UDC) under the screen.
The back of this terminal is not obscured from the patent image. This patent drawing resembles the new camera system of the Huawei P50 series and places the rear camera in the center of the handset. (The high-end P50 series is now officially introduced in China and is expected to hit the world in a few weeks. These new models have been completely redesigned, but have not yet been equipped with UDC.)
You may have a super curved display on the Huawei Mate 50 series, or you may have to wait a little more patiently.
Usually, the Huawei Mate smartphone series is released in October, but there are rumors that it will be released in November this year, and there are rumors that it will be released in 2022.
What is clear is that Huawei is forced to face setbacks one after another. In particular, the shortage of major chips across the IT industry brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic is also a problem. This makes it more difficult for Huawei to find new chip makers.
It also captures the appearance of a loss of brand power. Until the second quarter of last year, Huawei had established itself as an absolute powerhouse in the smartphone sector. But now, a year later, Huawei has been pushed out of the top 5 global smartphones. Oppo and Vivo, along with Chinese Xiaomi, did not miss this opportunity. Therefore, even if Huawei's smartphone patent is reflected in the flagship Mate 50 series to be released this fall, the product may not see the light of day due to issues such as chip supply.
Opinions are divided about the use of curved screens in smartphones. That said, there are pros and cons. First of all, a smartphone with a curved display looks stylish. However, a simple operation may leave some disappointment. Moreover, in general, touch functions respond worse at the edges of the display screen. Crucially, curved displays cost more to produce than anything else. For this reason, Samsung Electronics has been gradually reducing the number of smartphones equipped with curved displays. In addition, they are trying to reorganize the market mainly for foldable phones in order to catch up with China. With Samsung Electronics declaring a paradigm shift in the smartphone market with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3, it remains to be seen whether the super curved surface will work.
